Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze stated that President Salome Zourabichvili risks facing criminal charges if she does not step down and call for new parliamentary elections, reports the Adyrna national portal.
Speaking at a briefing, the Prime Minister reminded that, under the country’s constitution, Zourabichvili’s presidential term ends on December 29, 2024.
“Some European politicians and officials suggest that many changes could occur before December 29. But let me tell you, there will be no major changes. The radical opposition cannot win in Georgia, and on December 29, Zourabichvili will be forced to vacate her office,” Kobakhidze said.
He also emphasized that the current president has sufficient grounds to avoid violating the provisions of the Criminal Code.
On December 14, 2024, Georgia elected its president for the first time not through direct public voting but with a sole candidate proposed by the ruling party, former football player Mikheil Kavelashvili.
Salome Zourabichvili has declared the election illegitimate and refuses to recognize its results. She has vowed to remain in office until fair parliamentary elections are held.
