Kazakhstan is one of the few countries that produces nuclear fuel. It is planned to be used for the first domestic NPP. Timur Zhantikin, director of JSC "Kazakhstan Atomic Electric Power Stations", reported this at public discussions on the construction of nuclear power plants in Kazakhstan, which are being held today in Astana.
"In 2018, we developed the first section of the feasibility study for the construction of a nuclear power station, where we considered the possibility of building a power station in two regions. This is Kurchatov, VKO, now it's Abay ، and South Kazakhstan, near the village of Ulken, on Balkhash, it's Almaty Region. That is, extensive studies were conducted according to the recommendations of the IAEA - on safety, on the conditions of placement of powerful nuclear facilities and on the basis of the applicable regulations of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Both areas are recognized as suitable," said Timur Zhantikin.
