Kazakh Ambassador of Afghanistan Alimkhan Esengeldiyev met in Kabul on Sunday with acting Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Mottaki, who was appointed by the Taliban, which seized the country in August, the national portal Adyrna reported.
This is the first high-level contact between the Kazakh representative and one of the leaders of a terrorist movement in Kazakhstan.
"During the meeting, the parties stressed the importance of developing trade between the two countries and promised to expand bilateral cooperation in trade," a Taliban spokesman said on Twitter.
"The ambassador expressed satisfaction with the security situation in Kabul and called for the delivery of humanitarian aid to Afghanistan," the statement said.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan has not yet announced any information about the meeting. Earlier, Afghan officials said they needed to establish contacts with Afghanistan's new leadership. In recent years, Kazakhstan has established stable trade relations with the Afghan authorities, selling grain, flour and fuel to the country.
It should be noted that Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan have already established contacts with the Taliban. Tajikistan has categorically ruled out ties with the Taliban and has openly supported opposition inside Afghanistan. After the Taliban captured Kabul, Kazakhstan was unable to completely evacuate its embassy, only removing part of the diplomats and their families. In August, the Taliban reportedly guarded the Kazakh embassy in Kabul.
