Authorities in Tajikistan have said they will build a paramilitary base in China's Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Province, which will belong to Tajik security forces, RFE / RL's Tajik Service reports.

The facility will be built under an agreement between the Tajik Interior Ministry and the Chinese Security Ministry in connection with the Taliban occupation of Afghanistan.

Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Oblast borders China and Afghanistan. Tajikistan's First Deputy Interior Minister Abdurahmon Alamshozoda told parliament on October 27 that the facility would be built in the village of Wakhan in the Ishkashim district of Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Province.

Tolibkhon Azimzoda, a member of the lower house of parliament, said the base would belong to the Tajik Interior Ministry. According to him, during the construction of the base, all equipment and machinery imported to Tajikistan from China were exempted from customs duties.

"The construction budget is estimated at 55 million Chinese yuan, which is about 100 million somoni," he said.
