The first fully autonomous helicopter has been successfully tested in the United Kingdom, reports the national portal “Adyrna.”
The aircraft took off from Predannack Airfield on the Lizard Peninsula.
The helicopter, named Proteus, was developed by Leonardo for the Royal Navy. The project aims to demonstrate how large autonomous helicopters could operate alongside piloted aircraft in the future.
Representatives of the industry, the Royal Navy, and the UK’s defense authorities observed this historic moment.
During the test, Proteus completed a short flight program and controlled all flight systems entirely on its own, without any direct human involvement. Instead of a crew, the helicopter is equipped with advanced sensors and onboard computing systems.
Proteus is capable of carrying more than one ton of cargo.
