The leader of South Korea’s ruling “People Power” party, Han Dong Hoon, has demanded the resignation of President Yoon Suk Yeol for imposing martial law and claimed that the president poses a significant threat to the country. This was reported by AFP on December 6, according to the “Adyrna” national portal.
According to the agency, this statement will likely ensure enough votes for the president’s impeachment, with the vote scheduled for December 7.
AFP also recalled that Han Dong Hoon had declared on December 5 that he could halt the impeachment process. However, he reversed his decision due to the president’s refusal to acknowledge the mistakes in his actions.
“Considering new evidence, I believe that President Yoon Suk Yeol must urgently be removed from office to protect the Republic of Korea and its people,” the party leader said.
He emphasized that the president took no action against the military.
“They acted unlawfully, and the president refuses to acknowledge that this illegal martial law is a mistake,” Han Dong Hoon stated.
In his view, during martial law, the president ordered the counterintelligence chief to arrest several key politicians on charges of “acts against the state.”
“If President Yoon continues his presidency, extreme measures like the current emergency situation could be repeated, posing a significant danger to South Korea and its citizens,” he added.
South Korea’s largest opposition force, the “Democratic Party of Toburo,” announced on December 4 that it plans to impeach the president. The party also stated it would charge the president, defense and interior ministers, and other key military and police officials responsible for managing martial law with rebellion, AFP reported.
Earlier, Yoon Suk Yeol declared the end of martial law, which he had introduced just hours earlier.
Prior to that, the National Assembly—South Korea’s parliament—opposed the martial law regime. According to Reuters, on the evening of December 3, 190 of 300 deputies broke into the parliamentary building and voted to annul the martial law regime.
