May 31 is a day of remembrance for the victims of political repressions and famines, Adyrna correspondent reports.

On April 14, 1993, the Law of the Republic of Kazakhstan on Rehabilitation of Victims of Mass Repressions was adopted. Nursultan Nazarbayev declared 1997 the Year of National Peace and Remembrance of Victims of Political Repressions, and May 31 the Day of Remembrance for Victims of Political Repression and Famine.

According to official data, in 1927-53, more than 125 thousand people were persecuted in Kazakhstan. 25,000 of them were shot.

In particular, such prominent statesmen and public figures as Alikhan Bokeikhan, Ahmet Baitursynov, Mukhamedzhan Tynyshbayev, Mirzhakyp Dulatgdn, Turar Ryskulov, Magzhan Zhumabayev, Saken Seifullin, Ilyas Zhansugurov, Beimbet Mailin, Sanzhar Asfendiyarov and others. During the years of repression, there were 953 camps throughout the country.
