The level of Balkhash may significantly decrease by 2040. This forecast is made by specialists of the Ministry of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources of Kazakhstan, the national portal "Adyrna" reports with reference to Tengrinews.kz.

The agency modeled the level of the lake, taking into account the water intakes in China. The results show that the level of Lake Balkhash falls below the critical mark of 341 meters.

"The shallowness of Lake Balkhash can have negative consequences: drying and destruction of wetlands; destruction of wildlife migration routes, especially changes in the migration of underwater animals (ducks and geese), which changes their historical migration routes; climate change; loss of flora and fauna; destruction of the entire lake system; salinization of the western fresh part of Lake Balkhash can lead to the extinction of many species of fish living in new areas, "said the Ministry of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources.

All this can lead to the extinction of animals. For example, 120 species of birds live in the Balkhash region, 12 of which are listed in the Red Book. It is also planned to reintroduce the tiger. The problem of water supply to agriculture may also worsen.

"Due to the problem, the department has approved a plan for the preservation of Lake Balkhash. Kazvodkhoz specialists are working hard to provide irrigation water. An additional water pipeline has been laid to supply drinking water and irrigation water to the Shengeldy massif. In order to reduce water consumption in the Ili delta to 1 km3 per year, Kerbulak will be built in the lower reaches of the Ili River, about 25 km from the hydroelectric power plant. "Then it will be possible to carry out irrigation and drainage works on the river mouth, which will keep it in the channel phase and reduce its water consumption to 1 cubic kilometer per year," the ministry said.
