In the Kyzylorda region, the remains of an ancient animal were discovered in the Shakh-Shakh canyon, located about 90 kilometers north of the Karmakshy district center, Adyrna reports.

According to preliminary data, the unearthed bones may belong to a dinosaur that lived during the Cretaceous period of the Mesozoic era. The rare find has attracted great interest among scientists and is now being studied by paleontologists, who note that such discoveries are extremely rare in Kazakhstan.

“During paleontological research, it was determined that the remains likely belong to the Aralosaurus, a member of the hadrosaur family that lived about 93–86 million years ago. This discovery may draw the attention of European paleontologists and lead to publications in international scientific journals,” — stated the museum’s report.

The discovery was made during an exploration expedition organized by the regional museum and the Karmakshy District Museum of History and Local Lore. During the expedition, fossils of Cretaceous-era creatures were found in the canyon.

The paleontological artifacts will soon undergo detailed examination by experts, and the results will be publicly announced.

The Shakh-Shakh canyon was first explored scientifically in 1959 under the leadership of Russian paleontologist A. Rozhdestvensky. In the Boztobe formation of the canyon, remains of dinosaurs from the Cretaceous period were discovered. Later, in 1968, the skull of one such dinosaur was found and officially named Aralosaurus in the scientific community.
