During the storm, 340 people and 49 pets were rescued. According to U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas, false information suggesting that land would be confiscated from Florida residents has caused panic, leading some residents to refuse assistance from rescuers.
Initially a Category 3 storm, “Milton” weakened to a Category 1 hurricane upon reaching Sarasota County in Florida. Fitch Ratings has estimated the property damage caused by the storm to be between $30 billion and $50 billion.
