Kazakhstan has initiated a nationwide referendum to decide on whether to proceed with the construction of a nuclear power plant, as reported by Adyrna, a national news portal. According to Kazakh law, a referendum is a public vote on important issues, including constitutional changes, laws, and other significant matters, regulated by the Constitutional Law on the National Referendum and organized by a special commission.
Voting takes place on October 6, from 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM, with over 10,000 polling stations across the country. The first stations opened abroad in Seoul and Tokyo. All citizens aged 18 and above are eligible to vote, and ballots are available in both Kazakh and Russian. Voters are asked to respond to the question: “Do you agree with the construction of a nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan?” with options “Yes, I agree” or “No, I disagree.”
The Central Referendum Commission is expected to announce the official results within seven days of the vote.
