Scientists from the University of Cambridge have concluded that life might be possible on the exoplanet K2-18b. An article about this was published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters, according to the national portal “Adyrna.”

When scientists used the James Webb Telescope to observe the exoplanet, they detected dimethyl sulfide (DMS) and dimethyl disulfide (DMDS)—gases typically produced by living organisms on Earth. The presence of large amounts of these gases has led to the hypothesis that “life may be thriving on K2-18b.”

Scientists refer to K2-18b as a “Super Earth” because its size is about 2.5 times larger than that of Earth. It is located approximately 11 trillion kilometers away, a distance that current spacecraft or rockets are not capable of reaching.

Researchers do not rule out the possibility that the traces of DMS and DMDS in the atmosphere of K2-18b may have resulted from an “unknown chemical process.” The likelihood of such organic compounds appearing randomly outside the Solar System is estimated at 0.3%. However, for the discovery to be scientifically confirmed as evidence of life, this probability must be below 0.00006%.

“This is currently the most compelling evidence we have that life may exist somewhere else,” said lead researcher Madhusudhan in an interview with the BBC.
He added, “If life on K2-18b is confirmed, it would essentially prove that life is widespread in our galaxy.”
