U.S. Democratic Senator Cory Booker delivered a nonstop speech lasting over 25 hours, setting a new record for the longest speech in Senate history, according to France 24, as reported by “Adyrna” national portal.
Booker’s marathon speech began on Monday evening and continued into the next day. Remarkably, he never sat down or took a break during his address. His dramatic stand reminded many of the iconic scene from the 1939 film Mr. Smith Goes to Washington.
The previous record was held by Senator Strom Thurmond, who spoke for 24 hours and 18 minutes in 1957 in opposition to the Civil Rights Act. Booker surpassed this, becoming the longest-speaking senator in U.S. history.
During his speech, Booker declared:
“This is not a battle between the right and the left. This is a battle between right and wrong. America, does the Constitution live in your heart?”
The 55-year-old senator joked after setting the record:
“I need to forget about this for a while and take care of some biological necessities.”
Although Booker’s speech didn’t change the outcome of the Republican vote in the Senate, it became one of the most memorable moments in U.S. political history.
