A devastating earthquake in Myanmar caused a mosque to collapse in the city of Mandalay, killing at least 10 people, according to the national portal “Adyrna.”
Local news outlet Khit Thit reported that several bodies were found under the mosque’s rubble. The first earthquake, measuring 7.9 magnitude, was followed by another 6.4 magnitude tremor just 12 minutes later.
The quake was strongly felt in neighboring countries as well. In Bangkok, Thailand, authorities evacuated residents from high-rise buildings and temporarily suspended metro services. Tremors were also reported in Bangladesh, India, Laos, and China.
Rescue operations are currently underway in Myanmar, with officials warning that more people may still be trapped under collapsed buildings. Authorities are working to confirm the exact number of casualties.
A state of emergency has been declared in several regions due to the disaster.
