On March 10, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that 83% of USAID programs would be officially suspended, Adyrna reports.
According to Rubio, 5,200 contracts worth tens of billions of dollars have been terminated.
“These programs did not serve the core national interests of the United States and, in some cases, even caused harm,” he stated.
Following consultations with Congress, the remaining 1,000 programs will now be directly managed by the U.S. State Department.
At the end of February, the Trump administration had already signaled plans to cancel over 90% of USAID contracts.
“This agency is led by a group of radicals. We will fire them first, then make decisions,” President Donald Trump had previously stated.
Meanwhile, DOGE, an organization led by Elon Musk, determined that USAID funds had been misallocated.
USAID is an international development agency responsible for civilian foreign aid and cooperation in development. It operates in over 100 countries, including Kazakhstan, with an annual budget of $42.8 billion.
