German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has admitted defeat in the election. This was reported by Euronews on February 23, according to “Adyrna” correspondent.
According to exit poll results, the Christian Democratic Union/Christian Social Union (CDU/CSU) bloc won the election. The far-right “Alternative for Germany” (AfD) took second place, achieving the best result in its history.
The Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), led by Olaf Scholz, came in third but recorded a very poor result.
“This is a bitter defeat for the Social Democratic Party in the election. The results this time were bad, and I take responsibility for that. I congratulate the Christian Democratic Union,” said Olaf Scholz.
Now, the CDU/CSU must form a coalition, and Friedrich Merz is likely to become the next Chancellor.
It is worth noting that an early parliamentary election was held in Germany on Sunday, with a total of 29 political parties participating.
