Kazakh boxer Makhmud Sabyrkhan has become the Asian champion in the 54 kg weight category, securing the sixth gold medal for Kazakhstan, reports the Adyrna national portal.
Sabyrkhan faced Uzbekistan’s Shahzod Muzaffarov in the final. After dominating the first two rounds with a 4:1 score, the judges awarded the victory to the Kazakh boxer.
Notably, Makhmud Sabyrkhan won the World Championship last year and claimed the silver medal at the 2022 Asian Championships. This latest victory marks his first gold medal at the Asian Championships.
During the 2024 continental tournament, Sabyrkhan knocked out Taiwan’s Yan-Lin Lai in the first round and defeated Sri Lanka’s Jayanatha Kumar in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, he faced Thailand’s Sarawut Sukhet and secured a unanimous decision victory to reach the final.
The Asian Championships began on November 30 in Chiang Mai, Thailand, and conclude today, December 11, with the men’s final bouts. The Kazakh team competed in nine out of thirteen possible finals.
