Scientists from the University of Oxford and the American Cancer Society published a study that found that people who quit smoking before the age of 35 have a 100% lower risk of death from cancer, heart and lower respiratory tract diseases. This indicator was reduced by 90% by those who quit smoking before the age of 45, and by 66% by those who quit smoking between the ages of 45 and 64.

"According to the WHO, 8-10% of human health depends on the functioning of the national health system, but more than 50% of the responsibility depends on the person himself and his lifestyle. Research results show that quitting smoking significantly reduces the risk of death even in old age. But what can those who cannot give up smoking due to psychological dependence do? The concept of harm reduction is one of the modern solutions that suggest switching to an alternative that does not pose a health risk when quitting smoking. That is, to replace cigarettes with smokeless cigarettes that do not have a combustion process. As a result, the effect of harmful substances on the smoker's body is reduced, which leads to a gradual cessation of smoking," explained Gintautas-Juozas Kentra, doctor and deputy chairman of the "National Health Association" ZTB.

For the study, scientists used data from the US National Health Survey and the National Death Index collected from January 1997 to December 2018. More than 550,000 people participated in the study, 55.8% were women and 44.2% were men. The average age of the participants was 49 years. By the end of 2019, 75,000 people had died, with the highest number of deaths among smokers.

Scientists advise that you should quit smoking no later than 40-45 years of age. Cigarettes contain many toxins that cause narrowing of arteries and blood vessels and increase the risk of blood clots. But after five years, after giving up the bad habit, this problem begins to disappear, the probability of a stroke decreases. After 15 years, the risk of coronary heart disease decreases to zero and the probability of pancreatic cancer decreases. After 20 years, the chance of dying from smoking-related causes, including lung disease, is eliminated.
