Recently, the media reported that at the conference "Ways to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement and the carbon neutrality of Kazakhstan", President Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev made a forecast of a possible shortage of water in Kazakhstan by 2030. “Water security in Kazakhstan largely depends on the hydrological and ecological state of transboundary rivers. Today, there is a decrease in the volume of incoming water from neighboring countries. This leads to a disruption of the natural water balance of rivers and lakes, as well as to a deterioration of the ecological situation in a number of regions of Kazakhstan, the President said.

Kazakhstan faces water shortage

Climate change has reached such a level, as well as a decrease in the volume of water supplied from neighboring countries, that the government must quickly respond to them, adopt special programs. This is necessary for survival in extreme climatic conditions, which requires adequate and urgent action by government agencies and society.

The drought, which affected many countries this year, has made this problem urgent, and now it is the main manifestation of climate change. The climatic crisis in the aquatic environment in the form of water shortages or floods significantly affects the socio-economic and environmental conditions.

In such critical conditions, the leadership of Kazakhstan must define itself strategically. Solving the water problem should be a national priority and it should be formalized accordingly.
