President of Kyrgyzstan Sooronbay Jeenbekov has resigned, Adyrna correspondent reports. He announced his resignation on October 15, a few hours ago, on the official website of the President.
Jeenbekov said in a statement that he was not "clinging to power" and that he "did not want to remain in the history of Kyrgyzstan as a president who shot and shed blood for his people, so he decided to resign." According to him, "peace, integrity, unity and tranquility of the people of Kyrgyzstan are above all." Jeenbekov said that despite the "approval of the new government," "the socio-political situation in Bishkek remains unstable."
"On October 14, the Jogorku Kenesh approved the composition of the government. I signed a decree on the appointments. But it did not resolve the situation in the country. Unfortunately, the aggression has not subsided and the demand for my immediate resignation continues. "Protesters, on the other hand, law enforcement agencies," Jeenbekov said in a statement.
Jeenbekov called on both sides not to succumb to provocations.
"The military and police must use weapons to protect the state residence. In this case, it is clear that there will be bloodshed. I urge both sides not to provoke," he said.
Jeenbekov called on the newly appointed Prime Minister Sadyr Zhaparov and other politicians to evacuate their supporters from Bishkek and restore peace in the capital.
Jeenbekov initially said he would not resign and was the country's legitimate president. He later said he would step down only after parliamentary elections and the legal situation in the country.
