A trial has begun in Paris against actor Gérard Depardieu on charges of sexual harassment. Before the hearing, the actor’s lawyer denied all allegations. This was reported by AFP on March 24, according to the national portal “Adyrna.”
“All accusations are false. The truth is on our side,” said lawyer Jérémy Assous. He stated that they would refute the allegations in an “objective, impartial, and well-documented manner.”
Assous also mentioned that the actor had undergone heart surgery and suffers from diabetes. A medical expert appointed by the court determined that Depardieu is fit to attend the trial. However, it was recommended that each hearing should not exceed six hours and that a break should be taken every 15 minutes.
The 76-year-old actor was supported in the courtroom by his daughter Roxane, her mother and Depardieu’s former partner Karine Silla, as well as actress Fanny Ardant, who testified as a witness for the defense.
The case stems from incidents related to the 2021 film Green Shutters. The film’s director (now 54) and the assistant director (34) accused Depardieu of making inappropriate comments and engaging in misconduct on set. Specifically, they claimed he touched them inappropriately on the chest, buttocks, and genital area. In early 2024, they filed a lawsuit against him for sexual violence and sexist language. If convicted, Depardieu faces up to five years in prison and a fine of up to €75,000.
Outside the courthouse, about ten feminists gathered in protest. Their banners read, “We support the victims.”
Actress Anouk Grinberg, who appeared in Green Shutters, also attended to support the prosecution. She told AFP that Depardieu “constantly made inappropriate remarks” on set and that the producers who hired him knew about his behavior.
Gérard Depardieu, who has appeared in over 200 films, has faced multiple allegations of sexual misconduct. In April 2023, 13 women—including actresses, extras, and makeup artists—accused him of inappropriate behavior. However, this is the first case to reach trial.
The court proceedings are expected to last at least two days, with the verdict to be announced later.
