President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev signed a law on reducing the number of representatives of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis (the upper house of the parliament) by one-third - from 100 to 65 people, the national portal "Adyrna" reported.

"The Republic of Uzbekistan intends to make quantitative changes to the Constitutional Law "On the Senate of the Olei Majlis". If earlier six people were elected to the state body from Karakalpakstan, Tashkent and 12 regions of Uzbekistan, now this number will be reduced to four representatives from each region. In addition, instead of 16 senators appointed by the president, the head of state appoints nine members of parliament.

At the same time, the order of election of senators remains unchanged. Regional representatives are elected by secret ballot at meetings of local authorities, and candidates are approved by the president from among distinguished citizens with experience and special merit in science, art, literature, industry and other spheres of public life.
