Tensions in Tajikistan's Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO) have been high for nearly a week. At least eight people were killed and 11 were injured, according to official figures. However, according to local telegram channels, the number of victims and injured may be even higher, according to the national portal Adyrna.
According to the Tajik Interior Ministry, an "anti-terrorist operation" took place on May 18 in the Rushan district of Gorno-Badakhshan. It began after "200 organized criminal groups" closed a highway on the border with Afghanistan to "destabilize the socio-political situation." However, local telegrams reported that there were no terrorists.
