A court in Tehran has sentenced Iranian human rights defender and 2023 Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi to an additional six months in prison. This information was shared by her husband, Taghi Rahmani, on social media, as reported by the national portal “Adyrna.”
The new sentence relates to Mohammadi’s activities while serving her lengthy prison term. She and four other prisoners were accused of propaganda against the Islamic system for issuing a statement opposing the death penalty and organizing a meeting. The court session took place last Saturday.
The “Freedom for Narges” international coalition condemned the court’s ruling, calling it an attempt to silence Mohammadi. The activist herself declared that she would not comply with the decision and would continue her work.
Narges Mohammadi has been imprisoned since 2021 and has faced additional punishment for her human rights activities. She had previously been sentenced to prison time. Over the years, Mohammadi has been arrested 13 times, tried 9 times, and sentenced to a total of more than 36 years in prison for her advocacy.
The international community continues to recognize the importance of Mohammadi’s work on human rights in Iran and is calling for her release.
In October 2023, Narges Mohammadi was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for “her fight against the oppression of women in Iran and for promoting human rights and freedom for all.” The Norwegian Nobel Committee highlighted her decades of work defending women’s rights, her campaigns against the death penalty and torture in Iranian prisons, and her role in the 2022 protests following the death of Mahsa Amini.
At the time of the award, 51-year-old Mohammadi was being held in Tehran’s Evin Prison. Despite her imprisonment and a total sentence of 31 years, she continues her human rights work.
