The Ministry of National Economy has amended the Tax Code, which obliges all foreign Internet companies to pay value added tax to the state treasury, the national portal Adyrna reports citing Interfax.

The changes came into force on January 1, and the tax is 12% of the amount of goods and services sold. The agency expects that this will attract two billion tenge a year to the state budget. Companies do not need to register, but they must notify the tax authorities that they are willing to pay value added tax.

On September 15, the Majilis approved the draft law on the protection of children's rights in the first reading. It was initiated by deputies of the ruling Nur Otan party Aidos Sarym and Dinara Zakiyeva.

The decree obliges foreign social networks and messengers to register their offices in Kazakhstan and remove "prohibited information" within 24 hours at the request of the authorities. Otherwise, they will be blocked. Officials explain the need for the law by taking care of children and trying to protect them from online hooliganism.

Provisions to strengthen state control over social networks and messengers have caused widespread protests and fears. The current version of the bill uses terms such as "online platform" and "Internet resource", which may include Kazakhstani media sites.
