In an interview with Interfax-Kazakhstan, Timur Zhantikin, Director General of Kazakhstan Atomic Power Stations JSC, commented on the most suitable model of nuclear power plants for the country and in which regions of Kazakhstan nuclear power plants should be located in the future, Adyrna national portal reports. .

- First, it is necessary to develop basic capacities in Kazakhstan, and secondly, to diversify generation, as the country is currently dominated by coal generation. I explain that in order to ensure the country's energy security, it is necessary to fully diversify generation and, accordingly, we are considering nuclear energy, as Kazakhstan has large reserves, such as uranium mining, uranium processing and nuclear fuel production. That is, all this will lead Kazakhstan to build its own nuclear power plant, - said Zhantikin.

He also emphasized in which regions of Kazakhstan the NPP should be located in the future.

- Another important point. Basic power shortages are projected in the south of Kazakhstan by 2030. According to our estimates, about 2.7 GW. Accordingly, a nuclear power plant is needed to cover the deficit in the south of the country, said Timur Zhantikin, General Director of Kazakhstan Nuclear Power Plants JSC.

It's worth noting that the issue of construction of nuclear power plants in Kazakhstan has been discussed for several years. There have been several attempts to implement the corresponding project, but these plans never materialized. Recently, President Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev said that the decision to build a nuclear power plant in the country, no matter how unpleasant, should be made.
