Werner von Siemens was born on December 13, 1816 in the village of Lenta in the suburbs of Hanover, Germany. He was the eldest of ten children in the family. Werner's father Christian Ferdinand and mother Elenora were peasants.

After Werner graduated from the gymnasium in Lübeck, with the advice of his father, he transferred his documents to the Royal Guard Artillery. The members of the commission rejected the request of the 17-year-old boy, but advised him to go to the engineering-artillery school in Magdeburg and take the exam. Werner Siemens, who passed the exam without fail, studied the subjects of mathematics, chemistry, and physics that he loved so much at the gymnasium. Werner remembers seeing the optical telegraph, metal smelting workshop, steam engines, chemical instruments, gas lanterns in the ballistic laboratory of the school. He spent most of his three years of military training in this laboratory. He leaves the school with the rank of junior lieutenant.
