Freedom House has asked the Kazakh authorities to release politician Zhanbolat Mamay, the national portal Adyrna reports.

"Freedom House is concerned that Zhanbolat Mamay has been charged with new charges during a peaceful protest in January, casting doubt on the Kazakh government's commitment to a 'new Kazakhstan' that respects fundamental rights in the country. On June 8, Zhanbolat Mamay denied allegations of "organizing riots" and "spreading false information" following the January riots, the statement said.

Freedom House also called for Mamay's allegations to be dropped.

"If convicted, Mamay could face up to 10 years in prison for exercising his rights. Freedom House calls for Mama's release (if she is still in custody) and the removal of the charges against her.
