Presidential elections are taking place in Uzbekistan today

Presidential elections have started in Uzbekistan today. Polling stations will be open from 08.00 to 20.00 local time, the national portal "Adyrna" reports with reference to RIA Novosti.

Five official political parties in the country have registered candidates. According to experts, the main candidate to win the election is 64-year-old Shavkat Mirzieev.

According to the Central Election Commission of Uzbekistan, there are 19.86 million voters, 14 election commissions have been established and 10,760 polling stations have been prepared. On election day, 420,000 people who could not make their choice for various reasons took part in the by-elections on October 14-20. A candidate must receive at least 50 percent of the vote to win.

The elections will be monitored by 64.5 thousand people, including 970 international observers from 50 countries.
