This year marks the 135th anniversary of the birth of Nartai Bekezhanov, a folk poet, singer, composer, and cultural figure.
Nartai Bekezhanov holds a unique place in Kazakh art as an improvisational poet (aitys performer), zhyrau (traditional epic singer), and promoter of the nation’s spiritual heritage.
He was born in 1890 in what is now the Shieli district of the Kyzylorda region. From an early age, he showed a talent for poetry and singing, gaining widespread recognition for his improvisational skills. His works vividly reflected the daily life of the people, the realities of his time, and national issues. His songs stood out for their distinct melodies, rich musicality, and profound meaning.
In 1935, he worked as an artistic director in the Shieli district and later performed at the Estrada Concert Hall in Kyzylorda. In 1939, he was awarded the title of Honored Artist of the Kazakh SSR. He also participated in the All-Union Agricultural Exhibition in Moscow and performed at the Decade of Kazakh Literature and Art in Moscow in 1946, as well as in national aitys competitions.
Nartai Bekezhanov’s works have become part of the golden treasury of Kazakh musical art. His songs, such as “Tolqyn”, “Nartai Sazy”, and “Akhau, Zhalgan”, remain widely popular. Several collections of his works have been published.
The renowned artist was awarded the Order of the Badge of Honor, various medals, and an honorary diploma from the Supreme Soviet of the Kazakh SSR. A biographical work titled “Nartai”, written by Mukhamedzhan Rustemov, explores his life and legacy.
In 2010, Kazakhstan celebrated the 120th anniversary of Nartai Bekezhanov on a grand scale.
