According to the law on the Mongolian language, starting from January 2, 2025, official government documents will be written in both Cyrillic and traditional Mongolian script. This was reported by the Mongolian news agency MONTSAME and the “Adyrna” national portal.
“According to Article 7.2, Subsection 11.1.2 of this Law on the Mongolian Language, state and local government bodies are required to prepare official documents in both the national script and Cyrillic. This will be implemented based on a phased approach to the national script program and ensuring the education system accordingly. Article 24.2, Subsection 7.2 will come into effect on January 1, 2025,” the document states.
Educational institutions play a key role in fulfilling the requirements of this law.
A national survey conducted in 2021, with about 150,000 government employees participating, showed that more than 50% of them were ready to use Cyrillic alongside traditional Mongolian script in official documents, while 46.4% were opposed to it.
In comparison to the national average and other regions, the highest proportion of government employees willing to use Mongolian script in their work was recorded in the Govi-Altai region, with 74.7% of them expressing readiness.
Furthermore, among the 200,000 government employees, 69,400 or 53.6% learned Mongolian script starting from the first grade of school.
