Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Syria’s interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa have reached an agreement on gas supply, according to the “Adyrna” national portal.

During their meeting on July 12, the two sides discussed cooperation in the energy sector. Syria is currently facing serious challenges in this area.

“It was noted that in this context, a project to export Azerbaijani gas to Syria via Turkish territory will be implemented in the near future. This will contribute to ensuring Syria’s energy security,” the statement said.

Ilham Aliyev noted that Syria’s previous government had pursued an unfriendly policy toward Azerbaijan for many years, which led to stagnation in bilateral relations. According to him, with the establishment of a new government in Syria, great opportunities have opened up to strengthen ties between the two countries.

For his part, Ahmed al-Sharaa expressed regret that the former government had damaged Syria’s relations with many countries, including Azerbaijan.

The sides also noted that, given Azerbaijan’s experience in reconstruction and development in territories liberated from occupation, the country could contribute to Syria’s post-war recovery process.
