U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has sparked controversy with his proposals to make Canada the 51st state, publishing two maps showing what the map would look like if Canada joined the U.S., reports the national portal “Adyrna.”
On Trump’s Truth Social account, the map of Canada is shown in the color of the U.S., with the words “United States” written in black.
Earlier, Trump had posted on Truth Social, stating that both countries would benefit if Canada and the U.S. were to merge. At the end of November, he announced a 25% tariff on imports from Canada.
In response, the Canadian government firmly rejected the proposal. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly expressed their views on the social media platform X.
“There is no chance of Canada becoming part of the United States. Both countries benefit as the largest partners in trade and security,” Trudeau wrote.
Joly, in turn, stated that Trump’s comments showed a complete misunderstanding of what makes Canada a strong country.
