The flying car developed by SkyDrive Inc. took to the skies on Osaka’s artificial island, Yumeshima, ahead of the official opening of the World Expo. The expo officially opened on April 13, according to the national portal “Adyrna,” citing Japanese media outlets.
The electric vertical takeoff and landing vehicle (eVTOL) is a lightweight multicopter capable of carrying three passengers and one pilot. Its noise level is approximately three times lower than that of a helicopter.
During the demonstration flight, the multicopter hovered in the air at a height of about five meters for approximately four minutes.
“Our goal is for people to recognize this vehicle and come to like it,” said SkyDrive CEO Tomohiro Fukuzawa.
The company is based in Toyota City, Aichi Prefecture, in central Japan.
Flying cars were initially planned to be used as a means of transportation at the Osaka Expo. However, they will not be transporting visitors, though SkyDrive will be conducting demonstration flights of its flying cars throughout the event.
