The U.S. administration has imposed a 27% customs duty on goods imported from Kazakhstan, reports Adyrna National Portal.
Donald Trump announced this on his Truth Social account.
The new U.S. tariff was introduced primarily “to establish a balanced trade relationship.” The published list includes 185 countries. While the base tariff is 10%, for some countries, the tax rate turned out to be significantly higher. For example, tariffs on imports are: China – 34%, European Union countries – 20%, Switzerland – 31%, United Kingdom – 10%, Israel – 17%, Kazakhstan – 27%
The highest tariffs were imposed on Vietnam (46%), Cambodia (49%), and Laos (48%).
Trump called this measure the “Reciprocal Tariff in Honor of Freedom Day” and described it as the U.S.’s response to currency manipulations and trade barriers.
The new U.S. tariffs could significantly impact Kazakhstan’s exports of metals, agricultural products, and other goods. In 2024, Kazakhstan exported $1.97 billion worth of goods to the U.S., reaching a record high in the last decade.
The main exports from Kazakhstan to the U.S. include: Oil, Uranium (which increased fivefold compared to 2023), Ferroalloys, Silver
According to the National Statistics Bureau, the U.S. accounts for 2.4% of Kazakhstan’s total exports.
Kazakhstan’s main export destinations in 2024: Italy – 22.9%, China – 18.3%, Russia – 11.7%, Netherlands – 6.5%, France – 4.5%, Turkey – 4.1%
At the same time, the U.S. remains one of Kazakhstan’s key import partners.
The U.S. administration did not provide a detailed explanation regarding this decision for Kazakhstan. Analysts believe that the new tariffs could lead to additional costs for Kazakhstani suppliers and negatively impact their competitiveness in the U.S. market.
