Today marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Shora Sarybayev, a Turkologist, Doctor of Philology, Professor, Corresponding Member of the Academy of Sciences, and prominent scholar.
He was born on March 2, 1925, in Tashkent. His father, Shamghali Kharesuly Sarybayev, was one of the founders of Kazakh language methodology.
Shora Sarybayev graduated from KazMU in 1950 and completed his postgraduate studies in 1953. From 1954 to 1995, he served as the head of the Department of Kazakh Language History and Dialectology at the A. Baitursynuly Institute of Linguistics.
He conducted in-depth research in Kazakh dialectology, lexicology, language culture, the history of Kazakh literary language, and Kazakh-Russian linguistic relations. He studied the oral speech culture of the Kazakh language and analyzed borrowed words resulting from interaction with the Russian language. Additionally, he made significant contributions to Turkology, comparing the Kazakh language with other Turkic languages.
More than 250 of his scientific articles, textbooks, and monographs have been published. He was one of the compilers of A Brief Etymological Dictionary of the Kazakh Language, Dialectological Dictionary of the Kazakh Language, and Dictionary of New Terms. He also authored Regional Lexicography of the Kazakh Language, a six-volume work titled Bibliographic Index of Kazakh Linguistics, and Bibliography of Turkology Literature.
Shora Sarybayev passed away in 2018 at the age of 93.
