Kazakhstan may need at least three nuclear power plants (NPPs) to establish a full-fledged nuclear cluster, said Minister of Energy Almasadam Satkaliyev, reports the national portal Adyrna.
To create a nuclear cluster, at least three NPPs must be built. Based on this position, we are preparing a strategic plan. However, it must be approved by the government. We take into account the need to construct at least three nuclear power plants, the minister stated during a briefing at the Ministry of Energy.
According to the minister, the construction site for the third NPP will be determined in accordance with the general placement plan. The locations for the second and third NPPs will be announced in the second quarter of 2025.
It is not possible to plan one first and then consider the second. This is because we must first determine the configuration of networks, the power distribution scheme, interstate energy exchange possibilities, voltage levels in the grids, the construction of substations, and the feasibility of using direct current technology for long-distance energy transmission. This comprehensive document will be prepared soon. We will present it to the government in the second quarter of 2025, Satkaliyev explained.
