A Russian citizen, suspected of committing cyber fraud, was detained at the border of Kazakhstan, reports the national portal "Adyrna" referring to the press service of the prosecutor's office.

"On July 18, with the agreement of Taraz prosecutor's office, employees of the city's internal affairs department arrested the citizen of the Russian Federation, "R", who cheated three citizens of the city through Internet fraud during an urgent investigation," the report says.

Prosecutors said that between April and May, the foreign national and his accomplices called from various numbers, posing as a "second-level bank security officer" and a "law enforcement officer," and tricked the fraudsters into obtaining bank loans on their behalf.

"Using this scheme, fraudsters gave them false loans and took 19 million tenge of citizens' funds through the video communication of the WhatsApp social network," the prosecutor's office reports.

The suspect was detained while crossing the border crossing into the Kyrgyz Republic.
