The head of state refused to grant amnesty to the former head of the National Security Committee Masimov, the national portal "Adyrna" reported.

Karim Masimov was convicted on charges of treason and attempting to usurp power.

Massimov's request for pardon dated June 27 was considered by the Pardoning Commission under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

"According to the results of studying the possibility of applying the act of amnesty to Masimov, the commission submitted an appropriate proposal to the head of state, and he agreed," said the response of the presidential administration.

Karim Masimov was captured during the January 2022 incident. The criminal case against him was recognized as "top secret".

At the end of April 2023, he was sentenced to 18 years in prison by the decision of the Astana court on charges of "treason to the state, attempting to seize power by force, abuse of power and authority".
