In the western Indian city of Ahmedabad, 265 bodies from the crashed Boeing 787 Dreamliner have been taken to the city’s central hospital, according to Adyrna National Portal, citing Report news agency.
City police spokesperson Kanan Desai confirmed this to journalists:
“According to the reports we’ve received, 265 bodies have so far been transported to the hospital,” he said.
Earlier, India’s Home Minister Amit Shah announced that recovery efforts at the crash site were nearly complete. However, the exact death toll will only be confirmed after DNA testing.
According to The New Indian Express, more than 310 people are believed to have died in the crash, including not only passengers on board but also residents of the area where the plane went down.
Minister Amit Shah visited the crash site and stated that DNA samples are currently being collected from the victims’ relatives.
“Around 1,000 DNA tests will be conducted to identify the victims,” he said.
This incident is likely to be recorded as one of the deadliest aviation disasters in India’s history. Authorities are expected to release more detailed information on the cause of the crash and the final death toll in the coming days.
To recall, the Boeing 787-8 aircraft, en route from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, crashed in June. Of the 242 passengers on board, only one survived.
