On Thursday night, Israel began striking targets in Iran. The country’s authorities announced that the attacks were aimed at Iran’s nuclear program, according to Adyrna National Portal, citing the BBC. A state of emergency has now been declared in Israel as the country braces for possible retaliatory strikes from Tehran. “We struck at the heart of Iran’s nuclear program. The main target was the uranium enrichment facility in Natanz. Additionally, we hit the core of Iran’s ballistic missile development program,” said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a video statement. He also noted that Israeli forces targeted Iranian nuclear scientists. According to Netanyahu, the operation will continue for as long as necessary until the threat from Iran is eliminated. Announcing the launch of the operation, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz declared a “special state of emergency” in the country and stated that an Iranian counterattack is expected soon. “Following the Israeli state’s preemptive strike on Iran, missile and drone attacks against Israel and its civilians may occur in the near future,” the official statement said. During the Israeli attack on Iran, Major General Hossein Salami, Chief of the General Staff of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, and Mohammad Tehranchi, President of the Islamic Azad University, were reportedly killed. According to the IRNA news agency, General Gholamali Rashid, Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Iran’s Armed Forces, and nuclear scientist Fereydoon Abbasi, who led the Atomic Energy Organization from 2011 to 2013, also died in the strikes. Reports indicate that Israel carried out the operation in neighborhoods where high-ranking Iranian military officials reside. As a result, the Chief of Staff of the Iranian Army and several prominent nuclear scientists were killed.
