Verdict Announced in Koi-Tash Case in Bishkek, Reports “Adyrna” National Portal The Pervomaisky District Court in Bishkek has announced the verdict in the Koi-Tash events criminal case, which has lasted for more than five years. Former President of Kyrgyzstan, Almazbek Atambayev, has been sentenced to 11 years and 3 months in prison. Additionally, his property will be confiscated, and he will be stripped of all state awards. He has also been ordered to pay 5.4 billion soms in compensation to the state. Former Deputy Prime Minister Askarbek Shadiev received a sentence of 15 years and 6 months in prison, with his property also to be confiscated. He must pay compensation jointly with Atambayev and is barred from holding public office for three years after release. Other defendants, Farid Niyazov and Ravshan Jeenbekov, were sentenced to 7 years and 8 months, while Kanat Sagymbayev received 7.5 years. Some defendants were placed under probation, while others were released due to the statute of limitations. Thus, the court has put an end to one of Kyrgyzstan’s most controversial legal cases of recent years, which began in the summer of 2019 with an attempt to detain Atambayev at his residence in Koi-Tash village. Atambayev was found guilty on multiple charges, including illegal acquisition of land plots in Koi-Tash, corruption during the modernization of the Bishkek Thermal Power Plant, and organizing mass riots on August 7–8, 2019. To recall, in the summer of 2020, a district court in Bishkek sentenced the former president to 11 years and 2 months in prison and ordered the confiscation of his property. Later, in October 2020, protesters freed him, but he was re-arrested a few days later on charges of organizing mass unrest. He was placed under house arrest, but the ruling was overturned in November of the same year. After spending 3.5 years in prison, he was released and his second sentence was also annulled. Upon his release, he left Kyrgyzstan and went to Spain. Almazbek Atambayev served as the President of Kyrgyzstan from 2011 to 2017 and was twice Prime Minister. In 2017, he was awarded the title Hero of Kyrgyzstan.
