On the Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Political Repression and Famine, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev delivered a speech at the ALZHIR Memorial Museum Complex near Astana, emphasizing the importance of remembering the painful legacy of those tragic years, according to the national portal “Adyrna.”
In his address, the President spoke about the fate of nearly 8,000 innocent women imprisoned in ALZHIR, many of whom were the wives of prominent Kazakh figures.
“The descendants of those who suffered in ALZHIR are among us today. This is one of the most sorrowful chapters in our national history. Political repression was a tragedy that affected not only the Kazakh people but all ethnic groups living in our land,” the President stated.
Tokayev noted that significant efforts have been made in recent years to fully rehabilitate the victims of political repression. As a result of three years of work
by the State Commission, over 300,000 individuals have been rehabilitated, and the secrecy classification of more than 2.5 million documents has been lifted.
“A 72-volume collection of documents has been published based on the commission’s research. This is an unprecedented scholarly work. Researchers who contributed to this project will be officially recognized and awarded,” Tokayev said.
The President also announced the establishment of a special research center under the Presidential Archives, which has received nearly 700,000 previously classified documents.
He emphasized that history must not be used as a political tool.
“It is our sacred duty to remember that millions fell victim to totalitarianism. We must not distort history or justify a regime built on cruelty,” he said.
In conclusion, the President called on young people to learn from the past and to deepen their understanding of national history.
