The negotiations between the Russian and Ukrainian delegations, held in Turkey for the first time in three years, have concluded, according to the national portal “Adyrna.”
Reports indicate the meeting lasted around two hours. At one point, the Russian delegation took a break and left the room. Following the discussions, both sides are expected to make statements to the press soon.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also commented on the meeting.
“If Putin hadn’t been afraid to come to Turkey, we could have taken real steps toward ending the war this week. I was in Ankara yesterday and thank President Erdoğan for his involvement and warm reception. I was ready to meet Putin directly in Ankara or Istanbul—not just to talk, but to resolve all key issues. But he refused. I’m talking about Putin. The Russian delegation that came to
Istanbul was very low-level, with no one capable of actually making decisions in Russia. Still, I sent our team, led by Ukraine’s Minister of Defense, to at least find out if the Russians are truly able to resolve anything,” Zelensky wrote.
He emphasized that Ukraine is ready to take all necessary steps to end the war.
“I call on Putin to give his delegation real authority. I will keep the public informed throughout the day about what’s happening in Istanbul and whether the Russian delegation is capable of making concrete moves,” Zelensky concluded.
Additionally, Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov stated in a press briefing that their side focused primarily on discussing a ceasefire. Both sides reportedly agreed on a prisoner exchange involving 1,000 individuals from each side. Other details were not disclosed.
