Today marks Republic Day, which is considered the beginning of Kazakhstan’s sovereignty and statehood.

On October 25, 1990, after several hours of debates in the Supreme Council of the Kazakh SSR, a historic document — the Declaration on State Sovereignty — was adopted, legally confirming the nation’s aspiration for independence. This document laid the political and legal foundation for the formation of Kazakhstan as a new state.

Republic Day was first celebrated as a national holiday in 1995, and in 2001, it was officially included in the list of state holidays.

Although its status changed over time, on June 16, 2022, during the National Kurultai, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev proposed to restore Republic Day as a National Holiday. Later that year, in September, this initiative was officially enshrined in law.
