The Founder of the Nutrition Science School in Kazakhstan and Central Asia

Today, October 19, marks the 95th anniversary of Toregeldy Sharmanov, President of the Kazakh Academy of Nutrition, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor, and a distinguished scholar, Adyrna reports.

Toregeldy Sharmanov is a figure of great prestige in both Kazakhstani and global medical science. He is known as the founder of the national school of nutrition science and has made an enormous contribution to the development of Kazakh healthcare and medical research.

Born in 1930 in the Ulytau District of Karaganda Region, Sharmanov graduated from the Karaganda State Medical Institute and completed his postgraduate studies there. His professional career began in 1958 as the chief physician of Ulytau District Central Hospital, after which he held various scientific and administrative positions.

Career milestones:

  • 1962–1968 – Head of Department, Institute of Regional Pathology;
  • 1968–1971 – Rector, Aktobe Medical Institute;
  • 1971–1982 – Minister of Health of the Kazakh SSR;
  • From 1973 – Head of national nutrition research programs;
  • 1985–1988 – Head of the Department of Nutrition, Moscow;
  • Since 1995 – Founder and President, Academy of Preventive Medicine;
  • Since 1997 – Editor-in-Chief, Health and Disease journal.

 

Professor Sharmanov’s main scientific works are devoted to the physiology of nutrition. He conducted in-depth research on protein and vitamin deficiency, mechanisms of rickets development, and the impact of balanced and traditional diets on human health.

Under his initiative, special nutritional products for infants — “Bobek”, “Aruana”, and “Anticholesterol” — were developed in Kazakhstan.

One of his major contributions was his participation in organizing the 1978 WHO and UNICEF International Conference in Almaty, where the historic Alma-Ata Declaration on primary health care was adopted — a landmark event that shaped global public health policy.

Throughout his career, under his supervision, around 60 doctoral and over 170 candidate dissertations were defended.

Toregeldy Sharmanov remains a symbol of dedication, innovation, and scientific leadership in the field of nutrition and preventive medicine.
