A ceremony marking the start of construction of Kazakhstan’s first nuclear power plant was held near the village of Ulken in Almaty Region, Adyrna reports.

The button to officially launch the construction was pressed by Chairman of the Kazakhstan Atomic Energy Agency Almasadam Satkaliyev, Director General of the Russian Rosatom company Alexey Likhachev, Chairman of the Public Council of Zhambyl District in Almaty Region Bagdat Aliyev, and students from Russia’s National Research Nuclear University “MEPhI.”

It should be noted that special construction equipment has been delivered to the site, and a model of the Novovoronezh nuclear power plant has been installed. The plant to be built in Kazakhstan will be similar to this model. The model’s Unit No. 6 is the world’s first power unit of Generation 3+.

At the ceremony venue, drilling work also began to collect soil samples. The samples, placed in a capsule, will be sent to Russia for research.

The construction of Kazakhstan’s first nuclear power plant is scheduled for completion in 2035–2036.
