At the World Championships taking place in Zagreb, Kazakh Greco-Roman wrestler Aidos Sultangali won the gold medal, reports Adyrna national portal.

According to the press service of the Sports Development Directorate of the Ministry of Tourism and Sports of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Sultangali defeated Uzbekistan’s Alisher Ganiev in the 60 kg final.

Aidos Sultangali became the first Kazakh wrestler of the 21st century to win a world title in Greco-Roman wrestling. The last gold medals were achieved only before 2000. The most recent champion was Mkhitar Manukyan in 1999 (up to 63 kg).

Since then, wrestlers such as Almat Kebispayev, Meirambek Ainagulov, Demeu Zhadrayev, Khorlan Zhakansha, and Erzhet Zharlykassyn had reached the finals but were unable to win gold.

Overall, Sultangali became the tenth Kazakh wrestler to reach the World Championship final in Greco-Roman wrestling since the country’s independence.
