Today, May 7 – Defender of the Fatherland Day.
This significant date was added to the list of national holidays in 2012.
On October 25, 1991, by a decree of the President of Kazakhstan, the State Defense Committee of the Kazakh SSR was established. This structure was later reorganized into the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
On May 7, 1992, the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev, signed a special decree. According to this decree, all military units, institutions, and formations on the territory of the republic that had previously been part of the Armed Forces of the former USSR came under the jurisdiction of the Republic of Kazakhstan. In addition, the President assumed command of the country’s Armed Forces as the Supreme Commander-in-Chief.
The first person to be directly involved in the defense sector as the Minister of Defense was Colonel General Sagadat Nurmagambetov. As the first Defense Minister of independent Kazakhstan, he made a significant contribution to the formation of the national army.
The Armed Forces of the Republic of Kazakhstan include general-purpose forces, air defense forces, border protection forces, as well as the national guard and internal troops.
