The death toll has reached 18 following a devastating explosion in the southern Iranian port city of Bandar Abbas, located on the Persian Gulf coast, according to the national portal “Adyrna,” citing The New York Times.
A state of emergency has been declared in Bandar Abbas due to the serious threat to public health. Authorities fear the spread of hazardous substances within a 20-kilometer radius. Throughout the night, efforts were made to extinguish a fire that broke out at the Shahid Rajaei port, where chemicals stored in a container caught fire. According to reports, the container exploded due to sodium perchlorate, a key component of solid rocket fuel. The incident occurred on the same day as the third round of negotiations between the U.S. and Iran regarding Iran’s nuclear program. Local authorities do not consider the explosion an act of sabotage or a deliberate attack. Initially, it was suspected that a fuel storage facility had exploded at the port. However, Iran’s National Oil Refining and Distribution Company has denied this information. According to the latest data from Iran’s Ministry of Interior, 18 people have been killed and over 800 injured as a result of the explosion. It is not yet known whether any Kazakh citizens are among the victims. The governor of Hormozgan province, where Bandar Abbas is located, has declared three days of mourning.
